Dr. Kettleborough was educated at Scunthorpe Grammar School, and was an apprentice draughtsman and fitter with Appleby Frodingham Steel Co., Scunthorpe. In 1943 he graduated with B.Eng. degree at Sheffield University.

From 1943 to 1946 he was experimental officer, Torpedo Experimental Establishment (R.N.S.S.), Greenock, Scotland. Between 1946 and 1947 he served a post-graduate apprenticeship at B.T.H. Co., Ltd., Rugby.

In 1947 he returned to Sheffield University where he completed an honours course in engineering, and was subsequently awarded the Ph.D. degree.

Dr. Kettleborough was appointed lecturer in January 1951, and senior lecturer in April 1952, at the University of Melbourne, Australia.
