CHARLES JOHN ROBINSON. whose death occurred at Newport Shropshire, on 12th August 1942 in his eighty-third year, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1894. For a period of no less than sixty years he was a director of the firm of Messrs. Thomas Robinson and Son, of Rochdale.

After receiving his education at Clifton College he entered the family firm, founded by his grandfather, and was appointed a director in 1882. During the tenure of his office, the business underwent considerable expansion and on its reconstitution as a public limited company in 1893 he became a managing director.

Since 1909 he had held the position of chairman and after his resignation in 1937 he continued to act as a managing director. Mr. Robinson took an active part in the direction of affairs and travelled extensively in the firm's interests, going several times in the course of fifty years to South Africa, Australia, and India.
