C. M. Mason ( -1967)

1967 Obituary [1]

Mr C. M. Mason, CBE, TD, MSc, (Associate Member), died recently at the age of 79.

Educated at Hulme Grammar School and Manchester University he graduated with first class honours in 1908. After a year as a demonstrator, he went to S. America as assistant engineer with the Central Argentine Railway, returning to Europe in 1914 to join the Royal Field Artillery. After demobilisation in 1919, with the rank of Major, he joined the engineering department of his old university. In time he served as Dean of the Faculty of Science, and as a member of the Court and Council of the University.

Those who knew him will agree that he never changed in his personal qualities of integrity, courtesy, efficiency and devotion in every task he undertook. He sometimes confided that he regretted not having become immersed in research but, indirectly, he contributed significantly to this side of his colleagues’ activities by playing such an important role in the administration of the Whitworth Engineering Laboratories.

Mason's tact and understanding of personal problems, together with his sense of humour and obvious competence, ensured his successful participation in the general affairs of the University. His interest in students led him to give valuable support to students' recreation. His influence on the education of generations of engineers is recognised with gratitude and his death robs the Institution of a valued friend.

Mr Mason, who was elected an Associate Member in 1922, leaves a widow and a son and a daughter.
