1858 'Stabbing. —At the Oldham petty sessions, on Thursday, William Perling was brought before the magistrates on a charge of stabbing John Barlow, with intent to do him grievous bodily harm. The prisoner, who is a moulder in the employment of Messrs. Christian Schiele and Co., ironfounders, North Moor, was engaged at work on the 30th ult. when the prosecutor had occasion to pass him with some water, which he threw on the fire and a portion of it spurted on the prisoner. Some angry words passed between them, but the matter was apparently settled until, at six o'clock at night, the prisoner, who had been nursing his wrath, stabbed the prosecutor with a sharp file over the left breast. One or two of the workmen who saw the assault ran to the assistance of prosecutor, and conveyed him to the surgery of Mr. Sharpe, surgeon, North Moor where he fainted from loss of blood. The wound was immediately dressed, but he was in so precarious a state that it was a considerable time before he could be removed home A number of witnesses were examined for the prosecution ; and tbe prisoner, who made no defence was committed for trial at tbe next Liverpool assizes.'
