Carlisle Spedding was principal colliery steward to the Lowther family from around 1730 until his death in 1755

1755 Died. 'At Whitehaven, Cumberland, Mr Carlifle Spedding, principal engineer to Sir William Lowther. His death was occafioned by an explofion of foul air in the coal-mines, commonly called the fire-damp; an accident that frequently attends working in thefe fubterraneous caverns, and which had many times before endangered Spedding's life in his bold endeavours to preferve the colliery from imminent deftruftion: for to his uncommon abilities, affiduous application, and intrepid conduct, may almoft wholly be attributed the fuccefs of thefe valuable works, which were the principal fource of the immenfe fortune accumulated the by late Sir James Lowther.'[1]
