Chappell Piano Co

1896 Chappell and Co was registered on 7 December, to take over the business of music publishers and sellers and pianoforte manufacturers of the firm of the same name. [1]

In 1901 Chappell Piano Co., Ltd. was incorporated as separate company from the music publishing side.

Chappell's took out four patents:

  • 1904 April - 5684 Improvements in music supports for pianos and like
  • 1919 July - 129419 Improvements in or relation to piano actions
  • 1921 July - 166764 Improvements in or relation to upright pianos, organs or the like
  • 1924 Feb. - 210694 Improvements in or relation to grand pianos

By 1922 production for grands and uprights reached one hundred a week.

In 1929, Chappell went into an expansion mode, acquiring Allison Pianos; later that year they bought Collard and Collard.

In 1938, they acquired John Strohmenger and Sons. Half of Chappell's production was for export.

1947 Listed Exhibitor - British Industries Fair. The Range of Chappell Pianos shown includes the "Mignon" 6ft (1.8m) Grand and the "Chaplette". There will also be models of Our Associated Companies Collard and Collard, Allison and Strohmenger. (Olympia, Ground Floor, Stand No. C.1505) [2]

Chappell's shop of Bond Street is still trading in music and pianos. The pianos were made by Kemble until the April 2000 at their factory in Buckinghamshire. Warner Brothers hold the sole rights to the name Chappell.
