Charles Alexander Saunders (1796-1864), Secretary and Superintendent of the Great Western Railway.
1796 December 18th. Born at Southend the son of Robert Saunders (1754–1825) and his wife Margaret Keble ( -1828)
1818 August 29th. Married at Lewisham to Mary Rowlandson and they had six sons and two daughters
With Brunel and Gooch, wrote a paper "Observations on the Report of the Gauge Commissioners" which was presented to Parliament.
1861 Living at Westbourne Lodge, Westbourne Park, Paddington: Charles A. Saunders (age 64 born Southend), Secretary to the Great Western Railway Company. With his wife Mary Saunders (age 63 born London) and their children Eliza M. Saunders (age 41 born Southend); Herbert C. Saunders (age 26 born Kensington), Barrister in Practice; Arthur M. Saunders (age 22 born Kensington); Commercial Clerk. Also his grandchildren Algerner E. Stopford (age 2 born Westbourne Lodge) and Albert H. Stopford (age 10 months born Westbourne Lodge). Also a visitor and nine servants.[1]
1863 Retired as Secretary to the GWR and succeeded by his nephew Frederick George Saunders and Walter Stevenson
1864 September 19th. Died
1875 January 26th. His wife Mary died age 78.
