Charles Clifford (c1843-1927)

1928 Obituary [1]

CHARLES CLIFFORD, who was at the time of his retirement in 1912 locomotive superintendent of the Great Northern Railway of Ireland, commenced his railway career as an apprentice at the works of the Dublin and Wicklow Railway.

In 1861 he joined the Irish North-Western Railway at Dundalk, and five years later became locomotive foreman at Bundoran.

He was transferred to Derry in 1869 to fill the position of district locomotive superintendent.

Later he returned to Dundalk to become chief locomotive superintendent of the Irish North-Western Railway.

On the amalgamation of the latter with the Great Northern Railway Mr. Clifford went to Dublin as district locomotive superintendent.

Subsequently he again returned to Dundalk, this time as works manager, and after an interval of four years as district superintendent at Belfast, he was promoted, in 1895, to the position he held on his retirement. Under his charge the locomotive works at Dundalk were greatly enlarged and the railway company were much better equipped for constructing and repairing the locomotives required for service.

Mr. Clifford was in his eighty-fifth year at the time of his death on 5th September 1927.

He became a Member of the Institution in 1897.
