1922 Obituary [1]
CHARLES GEORGE ROBERTON, O.B.E., died from pneumonia after a few days illness at his residence in Cavendish Park, Barrow-in-Furness, on Monday, May 1, 1922.
Mr. Roberton was a well-known and highly respected official of Messrs. Vickers Limited. He commenced what proved to be a very distinguished engineering career in Glasgow, and had been engaged in Barrow for about 32 years - previous to the advent of the Vickers Company. After occupying an important position in the Marine Engineering Drawing Office, he became Marine Engineering Manager, and finally the firm's expert in internal combustion engines. He was largely responsible for the development of such engines from the petrol to the heavy-oil engine type for submarines and other Government and mercantile vessels, including some of the largest vessels so propelled. afloat.
He was also very intimately associated with the early development of airships in this country, and was a man of very considerable ability and inventive genius. Though chiefly interested in the development of mechanical engineering, Mr. Roberton had a wide and versatile knowledge of kindred scientific matters of which his membership of the Institute was an example. He had a most fascinating personality which rendered him very popular amongst all who had the privilege of working under him, and those who knew him best will mourn his loss as that of a very sincere friend.
Mr. Roberton was elected a member of the Institute of Metals on March 17, 1914.
