Born in Canada
1969 Bio. Note [1]
'Sir Charles Goodeve, director of B.I.S.R.A. (formerly the British Iron and Steel Research Association, and now the Inter-Group Laboratories of the British Steel Corporation), retired at the end of February. He had been director of B.I.S.R.A. since its inception in 1945, and under his guidance the organisation grew into the largest research association in the United Kingdom, carrying out research into all aspects of the steel industry's problems. This it continues to do since nationalisation of the major part of the British Steel Corporation. It also continues, by agreement, to serve the private sector of the steel industry.
Sir Charles had a distinguished career in research before joining B.I.S.R.A. and from 1942 was in effective control of all research and development for the Royal Navy. For services in this connection he was knighted in 1946. Among the many honours bestowed on Sir Charles are the Bessemer gold medal of the Iron and Steel Institute (of which he was president in 1961), and Fellowship of the Royal Society, of which he was recently elected a vice-president. Sir Charles will continue his association with the British Steel Corporation as a part-time consultant to the member for research and development, P. A. Matthews. He will be located at the B.S.C. head office, 33 Grosvenor Place, London, S.W.1.
The new director of B.I.S.R.A. is Dr. R. S. Barnes, who joined the association as director-desigate last year, having previously been head of the Metallurgy Division, A.E.R.E., Harwell.'
