CHARLES HANSON MACKAY died on September 9, 1909. He received his education at the Glasgow High School and the West of Scotland Technical College. For two years he gained experience as an electrical engineer's apprentice, and in 1899 he started as a marine engineer apprentice with Messrs. William Beardmore & Co., Ltd. At the close of his apprenticeship, in 1904, he was engaged in the erection of electric overhead cranes, in both shipyard and engine shop.
In 1906 he received an appointment at Port Talbot Steelworks as electrician, a post he held for one year.
He then proceeded to Bilbao, on behalf of Messrs. Lamberton & Co., Ltd., to erect a plate-mill at the steelworks of Martinas Rivas. The period allowed to him to erect it and run it was one year, and so well did he accomplish this task that on the expiration of that term he was appointed by Martinas Rivas as his steelworks manager. He was shortly after appointed director of the steelworks, a position which he held until his death.
He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1909.
