"CHARLES SAMUEL POWELL was in the service of the Rhodesian Railways during the whole of his career. On the completion of his general education at the City of London School, he proceeded to Southern Rhodesia and began a five years' apprenticeship in the railway workshops. After three years' experience in the drawing office at Umtali, he joined the Royal Naval Reserve and served as an engine-room artificer, but was subsequently commissioned engineer sub-lieutenant.
On his return in 1920 to the service of the company he continued as draughtsman until his promotion in the same year to the post of chief draughtsman. He then successively filled the positions of works manager, assistant mechanical superintendent and finally district superintendent in the transportation department. Mr. Powell, whose death in his fifty-sixth year occurred on 27th August 1945, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1927. He was the holder of a Board of Trade First-Class Engineer's Certificate."
