Hours of Business: Usual. Established in 1885 by Charles Southwell (d. 1904), as Charles Southwell & Co. Partners, Charles Southwell and his son Charles Elmer Southwell, George J. Langton (d. 1889), and A. E. Timms (d. 1892). Incorporated as a private Limited Company in 1907. Directors: Charles Elmer Southwell (Managing Director), H. H. Robins and A. E. Redfern. The founder was a nephew of John Castell (founder of Castell & Brown). He was actively associated with that firm for forty years, and for twenty years prior to 1885, sole managing partner. On the expiration of his partnershop he founded the present firm. The business of Castell & Brown was continued for a few years as a Limited Company, wound up in 1904, and the goodwill and trade marks purchased by Charles Southwell & Co. Premises: At Dockhead and elsewhere in Bermondsey, cover two acres, including extensive frontage to the River Thames. Staff: 500 to 600. Business: Wholesale and Export Manufacturing Confectioners.
