CHARLES STORY BELFORD was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne on 3rd January 1869.

He was educated at the Gateshead Grammar School and at the Mechanics' Institute, Jarrow-on-Tyne, during his apprenticeship, which was served with the North Eastern Marine Engineering Co.

On its completion in 1888 he went to sea, becoming Chief Engineer in 1891, which position he held until 1903, when he took up the position as Engineer Surveyor with the Law Accident Society, Ltd.

Five years later he was appointed Chief Engineer of the Engineering Department of the Legal Insurance Co., Ltd., retaining this position until his death, which took place on 4th July 1923, in his fifty-fifth year.

He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1909.
