Studied at University College, London

1878-80 Studied in France and Spain.

1881 Started work in the electrical department of the India Rubber, Gutta Percha and Telegraph Works Co at Silvertown.

Served as "electrician" on the SS Dacia on laying of cable from Marseille

c.1884 in charge of the electrical department of the company's works in France
