CHRISTOPHER JOHN MAWHOOD entered the service of Messrs. Markham and Company of Chesterfield in 1911 as chief draughtsman. He rose to the position of general manager; in 1916 he was appointed a director, and in 1919 he became managing director. He was closely associated with the late Mr. Charles Markham, who held a high opinion of Mr. Mawhood's ability.
In 1926 he visited South Africa to study mining conditions.
He was born and educated at Chelmsford and gained his engineering experience with Messrs. Colman and Morton, Chelmsford, Messrs. Davey, Paxman and Sons, Messrs. Galloways and Messrs. Foster Brothers and Company of Preston.
In addition to his responsibilities in connexion with the design of rolling-mill engines and colliery plant for Messrs. Markham and Company.
Mr. Mawhood was for some time chairman of the Chesterfield Sewage Disposal and Cleansing Committee, and he was mainly responsible for the erection of a new destructor for dealing with the town's refuse. He was also vice-chairman of the electricity committee, and was a governor of Chesterfield Technical College.
His death occurred on 13th August 1927 in his fiftieth year.
He became a Member of the Institution in 1917.
