'...the distress amongst the families of the colliers thrown out of work by the closing of the Pennywell Road Colliery, we regret to learn that at present there is no prospect of their being re-employed there. Messrs Leonard and Boult, of the Easton Colliery, who have purchased the Pennywell Road pit, apparently see no possibility of working it at a profit since none of the numerous proprietors during the last 80 years have succeeded with the pit...'[1]
