COLIN CAMPBELL HENRY was born in 1883 and received his technical training at the Swindon and North Wiltshire Technical Institute and at Sheffield University. After serving his apprenticeship in the locomotive works of the Great Western Railway, at Swindon, from 1900 to 1905, he continued in the service of the company for a further five years, during which latter period he was first engaged in the test house and subsequently in the drawing office.
He then joined the staff of the chief inspecting engineer, Crown Agents for the Colonies, at Birmingham, and began a connection which lasted, with an interruption for war service, to the end of his career. His first position was that of assistant inspecting engineer. Later he was appointed resident inspector. In 1916 he was granted a commission in the Royal Engineers and served in France for three years, being subsequently made district locomotive superintendent and officer-in-charge of workshops.
On demobilization he went to Sheffield as resident inspecting engineer for the Crown Agents with responsibility for the execution of engineering contracts carried out in that district. Mr. Henry, whose death occurred on 4th February 1945, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1922.
