1957 Costains sold their share in Costain-John Brown to John Brown and Co and the company was renamed.

1958 The business opened a research station at Leatherhead; the engineering division had been strengthened to design and install chemical engineering plants; the company was a specialist in automatic control gear associated with this work.[1]

1959 Constructors John Brown gained a number of contracts for oil refineries and chemical plants in the UK and abroad.

1959 The Automatic Control Division had increased workload, making control panels and installation of control systems.[2]

1961 Shipbuilders and marine engineers; manufacturers of automatic machine tools, engineers' cutting tools and portable electric tools; rolling stock, mining equipment and water turbines; general, civil and chemical engineering; design, construction and erection of steam generating plant and oil refineries.
