Cornelius Drebbel
(1572–1633), inventor and mechanical engineer.
1572 Born in Alkmaar
1604 Arrived in England
Demonstrated a perpetual motion machine which he donated to King James I in 1612
Moved between England and Prague, eventually returning to England in 1625
1626 Employed to construct water engines
Put in charge of several ships which were sent to La Rochelle by the Duke of Buckingham.
One of a company formed to drain the Fens
1634 Died in London
Other inventions included a submarine boat, and the art of dying scarlet which he transmitted to his son-in-law Dr Kufler.
He was the father-in-law of Pierre Van Drebbel. [1]
