Crediton Union Workhouse
1836-37 A new union workhouse was built at Western Road, Crediton. It was designed by Sampson Kempthorne who was also the architect for other Devon workhouses at Axminster, Barnstaple, Exeter, Okehampton, and South Molton, and Torrington. The building was superintended by Frederick Leake.
1851 Approx 188 inmates.[1]
1861 Approx 130 inmates. [2]
1869 Retirement of W. C. Leach, Master of the Workhouse for thirty years.[3]
1871 Approx 110 inmates.[4]
1875 Resignation of T. A. Burrington, Master of the Workhouse.[5]
1881 Approx 130 inmates.[6]
1891 Approx 70 inmates.[7]
1891 Death of William Vanstone, Master of the Workhouse.[8]
1915 Elected A. J. Gibbon as master of the Union Workhouse.[9]
1921 Proposal to change the name from 'Crediton Union Workhouse' to 'Institution for Mental Defectives'.[10]
1930 Master is J. W. Boyce. Proposed to remove the name 'Crediton Union Workhouse' from the front of the building as it was now known as Western lodge and was not a workhouse but a home.[11]
