at Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire

Construction started in May 1894. B.o.T. inspection by Col. Yorke on 31 May 1897. Swing span 750 tons, 165.5 ft long.

Originally a road and rail bridge, but since 1963 it has only carried the A17 over the River Nene. Constructed by Andrew Handyside. Hydraulic machinery by W. Armstrong & Co. Masonry contractor: W. Mousley of Rugeley.

It replaced a hand-operated swing bridge built in 1851 to the design of 'Robert Stevenson and Borthwick' (presumably Robert Stephenson and Michael Andrews Borthwick), and used only for road traffic until 1866, when railway traffic was added. [1]
