D. F. Woodyard was educated at Marling School, Stroud, and served an apprenticeship at T H 8J Daniels Ltd (now Daniels-Hamilton Ltd). During this time he obtained an HNC in Mechanical Engineering at the Mid-Gloucestershire Technical College.

He then went to sea for about four years as an engineer officer with the British India Steam Navigation Co, mainly on Far East schedules. Subsequently he worked as an overseas sales engineer in the large industrial projects section of The Permutit Co Ltd and entered technical journalism as an editorial assistant on The Steam and Heating Engineer. He worked as an assistant editor on Engineering for over two years and was editor of Mechanical Engineering News from its launch until July when he became a freelance technical journalist.
