Mr D. MacFarlane (Member), Chairman of the Northern Ireland Branch, was educated at Rutherford and Armstrong Colleges and served an apprenticeship with C. A. Parsons and Co. Ltd, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
After a time with Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd, he returned to Parsons and Co. before joining Davidson and Co. Ltd, Belfast, in 1932, where he was responsible for the design of the first high-efficiency axial fans to be installed in a British mine.
He is the author of a number of papers and books on ventilating engineering.
Mr MacFarlane is a Past-President of the Belfast Association of Engineers and was editor of their technical papers for some 20 years. He is a founder member of the local centre of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1932 and transferred to Member in 1959. Mr MacFarlane was a member of the Northern Ireland Advisory Committee and has been a member of the Branch Committee for some time.
He has remained with Davidson and Company where, in addition to special duties, he acts as Patents Consultant Engineer.
