1980 Demand for castings from the motor industry fell by over 20%, for trucks by 35% and for tractors by 25%. Financial losses were paralleled by closures and job losses. Some £12 million of the £15 million cost of closures was suffered at Smethwick, where three foundries were closed leaving only Dartmouth Auto Castings foundry No 3. The company ceased to exist in 1980.[3][4]
