DAVID BALFOUR died on the 22nd December, 1914, at Myre Hall, Houghton-le-Spring, Durham, aged 76.
The son of the late Mr. J. Balfour, manager of the Dundee, Perth and London Shipping Company, he was born at Dundee in 1838, and served his pupilage with the late Mr. J. Fulton, City Engineer of Dundee and later of Newcastle-on-Tyne.
Mr. Balfour was early in his career appointed engineer to the Sunderland and Houghton Highway Board, and for 45 years he carried on at Newcastle, and latterly also at Westminster, an extensive consulting practice, in which he was joined by his son, Mr. David Balfour, junior, M.Inst.C.E. In this capacity he was responsible for a large number of engineering works carried out in many parts of England and Scotland, including sewerage and sewage-disposal schemes, water-supplies, bridges, railway and tramway work, shipping staiths, shipbuilding yards, and other undertakings. He frequently gave evidence in Parliamentary Committee rooms and contributed papers to various scientific and technical societies.
He was a Fellow of the Geological Society, the Royal Meteorological Society, and the Royal Sanitary Institute. Of late years he had retired from active professional pursuits, the practice being carried on by his son.
Mr. Balfour was elected a Member of The Institution on the 4th May, 1876.
