DAVID BOSWELL DONALD was born in Edinburgh in 1856, and received his education at the Royal High School and at George Watson's College.

He served his apprenticeship during the years 1873-8 in the shops and drawing office of Messrs. Brown Brothers and Co., Rosebank Ironworks, Edinburgh, and on completion of his term he remained some years with that Firm superintending the erection of hydraulic coal-tips, cranes, and other equipment at Ayr, Cardiff, Boness, and elsewhere.

About the year 1883 he took up an appointment with Messrs. John Freeman Sons and Co., Ltd., Penryn, Cornwall, as engineer - and subsequently as manager - of their extensive granite quarries, and during his long stay with that Firm he designed and introduced in the quarries and works various valuable labour-saving and other improvements.

Whilst in Cornwall Mr. Donald became a director of the Redruth Foundry Co., Ltd.

He left Messrs. Freeman in order to take up a similar managerial position with Messrs. A. and F. Manuelle, London.

During the War he worked for the Ministry of Munitions, and in recent years acted as inspecting engineer for the Victoria and Commonwealth Government Railways, Australia.

His death occurred suddenly, in London, on 9th February 1926.

He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1898 and a Member in 1903.
