IjAVID FRANCIS HOGARTH, born at Lowestoft, Suffolk, on the 15th September, 1839, was the eldest son of the Rev. David Hogarth, Rector of Portland, Dorset.
After serving articles to the late Sir John Coode, Past-President, he was employed on the Portland Breakwater and on other works in England.
In 1865 he went to India as an Assistant Engineer on the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, and in 1868 he joined the staff of his cousin, the late Mr. Lee-Smith, on the Government Railway from Lahore to Peshawur.
Soon after he was appointed permanently to the Indian Public Works Department, in the railway branch of which he served in various parts of India, rising to the grade of Superintending Engineer, and retiring on attaining the age of 55.
Mr. Hogarth died suddenly on the 18th December, 1902, at his residence, Rivershill, Cheltenham, leaving a large circle of relatives. and friends to deplore his loss.
He was elected a Member of the Institution on the 4th December, 1877.
