He was attracted by the terms offered by the Secretary of State for India to Engineers willing to enter the Indian Public Works Department, and, passing successfully the annual competitive examination for candidates, held in London in 1867, he joined the service on the 26th of July that year. He arrived in India on the 18th of October, 1867, and was posted as a third-grade Assistant Engineer to the Central Provinces. . . . [more]
