This fine mediaeval stone bridge is a grade I listed structure and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Probably built in the late 14th century.
Two spans of 55 feet (16.7 m) andone of 29 feet (8.8 m). The bridge was probably built by monks of St Mary's Abbey, York.
The parapets were raised in the 17thC. The bridge was repaired in 1705 and repointed in 1829 using Roman-type cement. The eastern arch was repaired c.1869.
The bridge formerly carried the Skipton to Kendal road over the River Lune, where the river narrows. The roadway on the bridge is only 12 feet (3.7 m) wide, unsuited to increasing traffic volumes, and the bridge was closed to vehicles in 1932, A65 traffic now using the Stanley Bridge.
