"DUDLEY OTIS BLACK, R.N. ret., whose untimely death occurred in October 1950, at the age of thirty-nine, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1947. He was educated in H.M. Training Ship Conway and at the Royal Naval Engineering College, Devonport, where he qualified as lieutenant (E.) in 1933. He then went to sea as watch-keeping officer on H.M.S. Exeter and was in charge of motor boats and aircraft catapults. In 1935 he was posted to the submarine depot at Portsmouth for a course of instruction, after which he held a series of short appointments in submarines and depot ships. He was also senior engineer in the seaplane carrier H.M.S. Albatross and was on the staff of the director of the torpedo and mining department. In 1946 he was promoted to the rank of commander (E.) and appointed to the Royal Naval aircraft repair yard at Donibristle, where he acted as production manager with responsibility to the superintendent for planning and progress of repairs. He retired from the Service three years later and joined the staff of the English Electric Company, Ltd., Rugby, as education officer, where he remained until his death."
