Major EUGENE GUY EUSTON BEAUMONT, O.B.E., was well known as a consulting engineer specializing in motor vehicle transport.
He received his technical education at the Colchester School of Science and Art and served his apprenticeship from 1894 to 1898 with Messrs. Davey, Paxman, and Company, Ltd., Colchester, with whom he remained as chief assistant in the high-speed engine department for a further five years.
At the expiration of this period he became assistant to his father, the late Mr. W. Worby Beaumont, M.I.Mech.E., consulting engineer, in London. In this capacity he was especially concerned with the equipment of works and factories with plant and the design of motor vehicles until 1914 when he joined H.M. Forces and served in the R.A.S.C. as inspector of motor transport and later as senior inspector at the War Office, rising to the rank of Major.
In 1920 he received the important appointment of motor superintendent to the Anglo-American Oil Co with responsibility for the transport of petroleum products throughout the British Isles, in addition to the supervision and maintenance of a fleet of 2,500 motor tanks and 500 motor cars. Furthermore he had the charge of the main repair works with the control of a numerous personnel and was also responsible for the maintenance of 40 repair depots.
He relinquished this position in 1929 and took over his father's practice, in which he was actively engaged as consultant to the road motor transport industry up to the time of his death, which occurred in his seventieth year on 19th February 1947.
Major Beaumont was elected a Member of the Institution in 1930. He was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a past-president of the Institution of Automobile Engineers.
