1890 Company formed to acquire a freehold property of about 17 acres, at South Bank, Middlesbrough, containing valuable beds of salt rock, and to carry on the business of salt, manufacturers. A bed of rock salt 90 feet thick has been found at a depth of 1,562 feet. It is estimated that the salt exists to the extent of 200,000 tons to the acre.[1]
