WWII Lt Col Edgar Frank Brawn of the Royal Engineers designed the Romney Hut or Romney shed, a prefabricated arch-steel building, specifically designed to withstand snow loads and high winds, the weak points of its predecessors (Nissen Huts and Iris huts). The similar, American-designed Quonset hut was easier to install and was built subsequently in preference to the Romney hut.
