"EDGAR LIONEL LULY, B.Sc., was identified with the firm of Messrs. Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd., boiler makers, throughout his professional career. On the completion of five years' practical training as a shipwright apprentice in the chief constructor's department at H.M. Dockyard, Pembroke (during part of which period he attended the dockyard school), in 1923 he gained an open scholarship at the University College of Wales in Swansea, where he graduated B.Sc. in engineering in 1926, and during the last year was engaged on special work relating to fuels and combustion.
He then began his long association with Messrs. Babcock and Wilcox, which was only terminated by his death on 25th September 1949, at the age of forty-six. During the first nine years of his service with the firm he was engaged on investigating boiler operation and fuels in Britain, on the Continent, and the East, and on the utilization of peat in Denmark and Ireland. From 1935 he was engaged in special boiler designs and combustion processes in Britain and abroad. The Babcock—Luly steam cycle diagram was the result of his investigations into high pressures and temperatures. In 1944 he was appointed manager for the Birmingham area. Mr. Luly was elected a Student of the Institution in 1925, transferred to Graduateship in 1934, and to Associate Membership four years later."
