EDMUND DU CANE SMITHE, born on the 20th June, 1853, died in India on the 30th August, 1908.

Passing into the Indian Public Works Department from Coopers Hill in 1875, he spent the first half of his service on irrigation work in the Punjab and Sind.

He was the first to hold the office of Sanitary Engineer to the Punjab Government. Latterly, he acted as Chief Engineer and Secretary to the Governments of the Punjab and of the United Provinces successively, and just before his health failed he had been engaged on arduous famine relief work.

Mr. Du Cane Smithe was elected a Member of The Institution on the 3rd February, 1903.
