Edward Bailey Ashmore
Early aviator
Major-General Edward Bailey Ashmore was a gunner. Before the war broke out he had qualified as a pilot and was a member of the RFC Reserve. After serving as CRA 29th Division, he was given command of I Brigade RFC.
His knowledge of gunnery and flying made him the ideal candidate to organise the world’s first air defence system, the London Air Defence Area, in response to German fixed wing bombing raids on the capital in the spring of 1917.
He was the author of Air Defence (1929) and founder of the Royal Observer Corps.
