MAPPLEBECK, Edward, J.P.; b. at Moseley, April 6th, 1845. Educ.: King Edward's School. For many years Chairman and Managing Director of John Wilkes, Sons, and Mapplebeck, Ltd., of Liverpool Street and Abberley Street, Birmingham, manufacturers of high conductivity copper wire, copper and brass tubes, etc.; supplied the high conductivity wire for the first Atlantic cable, also 32,000 brass condenser tubes for each of the S.S. Lusitania (sunk in the War) and Mauretania; appointed Magistrate for City of Birmingham, 1896; in younger days was an athlete and was never beaten in the two mile races; retired from business in 1923; tn. Sarah, d. of John Wilkes, 1870; three s. five d. Private address Woodfield, Leamington Spa.

EDWARD MAPPLEBECK was for fifty years connected with Messrs. John Wilkes, Sons, and Mapplebeck, of Birmingham, copper smelters and refiners and tube manufacturers. Mr. Mapplebeck was born in 1845 and was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Birmingham. He became a partner in the firm of John Wilkes, Sons, and Mapplebeck in 1870, and subsequently held the position of managing director. The firm made the copper wire for the first Atlantic cable. In 1925 Mr. Mapplebeck retired, at the age of 80. His death occurred at Leamington Spa on 27th April 1937, in his ninety-third year.
He had been a Member of the Institution since 1897.
