Edward Wood
1884 'DEATH OF MR EDWARD WOOD. The death is announced of Mr. Edward Wood, for many years the Junior partner of the old-established firm of Messrs. J. and E. Wood, Victoria Foundry, Garside-street. The deceased gentleman expired at five o'clock on Saturday morning, Mount Ephraim Hotel, Tunbridge Wells, where he had been staying for the past three weeks. The firm with which the deceased gentleman was connected was established nearly half a century ago, and was originally that of Messrs. Stoddart, Knight & Mather, Mr. E. Wood entering the firm on the retirement of Mr. Mather. Mr. Stoddart afterwards retired, and the firm was then Knight and Wood, and the death of Mr. Knight in March, 1859, Mr. Wood and his brother succeeded. Originally the firm only employed about 100 hands, whereas now more than five times that number are employed, whilst the premises have increased tenfold. He was one of the ablest and most enterprising engineers in the country, and conducted the practical part of the the Victoria Foundry, while his elder brother, Mr. John Wood, had charge of the commercial department of the undertaking. He invented and secured patents for various improvements in steam engines, boilers, mill-gearing, &c., conspicuous amongst these being his arrangement of "Corliss" valve gear, which has done so much to perfect the modern Corliss engine, and has proved of essential service. The deceased gentleman had been in failing health for several years; and four years ago became so unwell that he was prevented from taking any further active part in the concern, withdrawing altogether from the firm about two years ago. He abstained from taking any share in municipal or other public affairs. Mr. Wood resided at West Bank, Chorley New-road, Little Bolton. He was 56 years of age, and leaves a widow, but no children. The remains of the deceased gentleman will be removed to Bolton, and the internment will take place on Thursday next at Worsley Church.'[1]
