Electricity Council Research Centre
of Capenhurst, Cheshire
1965 The Electricity Council established the Electricity Council Research Centre at Capenhurst in Cheshire. This establishment undertook research and investigative work, on behalf of the Area Boards, relating not only to distribution plant and systems but also to creating new marketing opportunities for the sale of electricity.
It was located in buildings no longer used by British Nuclear Fuels on their site at Capenhurst in Cheshire. The personnel consisted of some ninety research officers from scientific and other backgrounds who, with supporting staff, formed a large, inventive and influential scientific research laboratory.
The Centre undertook fundamental research and investigative work on behalf of the UK Electricity Boards to advance science and engineering in the distribution and use of electricity. Areas of research included:-

- Light and lighting
- Human comfort
- Heat storage
- Metal melting.
- Metal treatment
- Microwave heating treatment
- Frozen food development
- Effluent treatment
- Low energy housing design
- Timber drying
- Plant growth
- Battery development
- Electric traction
Following privatisation of the electricity industry in the early 1990s, the organisation evolved into several smaller commercial enterprises, the largest of which became EA Technology.
