From Graces Guide

1966 Obituary[1]

"We regret to record the sudden death on September 22 of Mr. Eric A. Binney, who until his retirement in 1956 headed the traction development department of The English Electric Company Ltd. Mr. Binney pioneered many new developments including the 3 300 h.p. "Deltic" locomotive and the conversion to 50 c/s a.c. of the Lancaster-Morcambe-Heysham line for proving trials of the high-voltage standard frequency system of main line electrification. By training and instinct a machine designer, Mr. Binney went to university in Switzerland and afterwards worked with Western Electric in America on the design of special a.c. machines and later with the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company Ltd. at Sheffield. In 1931 he joined The English Electric Company Ltd., gaining a high reputation throughout the traction world. When he retired in 1956, the company retained him as a consultant."
