1946 Obituary [1]
"FRANCIS MARTIN was associated with water supply engineering during most of his career and for thirty-one years held the position of engineer and manager to the Mid-Sussex Joint Water Board.
He was born in 1868 and served his apprenticeship with the Central Marine Engineering Co, West Hartlepool, from 1884 to 1889. After four years' experience at sea as marine engineer—during which period he obtained his Board of Trade First-Class Engineer's Certificate—he rejoined the Central Marine Engineering Company as mechanical draughtsman. From 1900 to 1906 he was chief draughtsman in the Brighton Corporation's waterworks department and, for about a year, acted as engineer and manager for the Cuckfield Rural District's water supply. He then entered upon his long association with the Mid-Sussex Water Board, which was only terminated by his retirement on superannuation in 1938. Mr. Martin, whose death occurred on 12th October 1945, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1907, and was transferred to Membership in 1919."
