FRANK TORRENS STOKES was born in 1872 and educated at Christ's College, Finchley.
He became a pupil at the Bow works of the North London Railway and afterwards went to South Africa as a draughtsman with H. Eckstein and Co.
For five years, from 1893 to 1898, he was engaged in the gold-fields on the erection and design of mining machinery, and Mr. Stokes was regarded as one of the pioneers of the South African engineering community.
In 1901 he joined the staff of the Johannesburg Municipality, with whom he remained for the rest of his life. His first appointment was that of draughtsman in the Gas and Electric Supply Department, and he rose to the position of chief mechanical engineering assistant to the General Manager of that department. In this capacity he prepared plans and specifications and supervised the erection of the new power station plant of the city.
His death occurred on 29th October 1926.
Mr. Stokes became a Graduate of this Institution in 1892, an Associate Member in 1905, and a Member in 1911.
