Frederick Gibson Garton

1871 William Garton 40, brewer, Eliza Garton 43, Frederick G Garton 8 were visitors in New Basford Notts.

1881 Grocer's apprentice, living with his parents[1]

He invented a sauce which he later wanted to call HP because he claimed to have heard that it was available in a restaurant in the Houses of Parliament.

1891 Pickle sauce manufacturer, living in New Basford with Florence C Garton 24, Florence E Garton 2[2]

1901 Grocer, employer, living in West Bridgford[3]

Garton had a store that was a small co-operative where fairly priced foodstuffs were available, and from which he sold the sauce he had invented.

Edwin Samson Moore visited Garton to collect a debt and noticed the sauce-making activities. He purchased the recipe and brand for £150 plus the cancellation of the debt.
