FREDERICK HOWARD CHIVERS was for thirty years chief engineer of the Llanelly Steel Company and, except for a period of some five years, maintained a close connection with South Wales during the whole of his professional career.
He was born in 1884 and educated at Denstone College, Staffs. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. R. Nevill and Company, founders, of Llanelly, from 1900 to 1904, he went to sea, rising to be second engineer, and during this period obtained his Board of Trade First-Class Certificate.
In 1910 he joined Messrs. Richard Thomas and Company, Ltd., of Llanelly, as assistant engineer in the steel bar plant and tinplate shops. His long association with the Llanelly Steel Company, during which he was responsible for many important developments, dated from 1912 and lasted until his death which occurred on 10th July 1942 as the result of an accident while on duty at the works.
Mr. Chivers was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1919 and was transferred to Membership in 1922.
