ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET SIR FREDERICK WILLIAM RICHARDS, G.C.B., D.C.L. (Oxon.), was elected an Honorary Member of The Institution on the 5th March, 1901 ; so that at the time of his death, on the 28th September, 1912, he had occupied that position more than l1 years.
His nomination by the Council indicated their appreciation of his long and distinguished service to the Navy and the nation. Born on the 30th November, 1833, he entered the Navy in his fifteenth year; and, as was the custom at that time, immediately joined a ship and served for several years on the Australian station at a time when great excitement was caused by the discovery of gold.
Gaining his promotion to higher ranks in the ordinary manner, by lapse of time and good service, he passed through the grades of Lieutenant, Commander, and Captain, to which latter rank he was appointed when about 33 years of age.....(more)
