Dr. FRIEDRICH SCHUSTER, whose death took place in July 1932, will be well remembered as an old member of the Institute.
He was born in Vienna in 1863 and received his training in engineering at the Vienna Technical High School.
In 1897 he entered the employment of the Witkowitz Ironworks and Mining Company as engineer, of which undertaking he later became managing director in succession to Mr. Holz. Under the management of Dr. Schuster the Witkowitz Works were entirely rebuilt and re-organised. The Talbot process was introduced by him in 1913, and it will be remembered that at the May Meeting in 1914 he presented an important paper in which he gave full comparative results of the working of the Talbot furnace, of the Wellman tilting furnace, and of the fixed open-hearth.
In 1916 Dr. Schuster retired from the direction of the Witkowitz Ironworks, being succeeded by Dr. Adolf Sonnenschein.
During the War he became Technical Advisor to the Austrian Government and occupied several positions of high political importance. When the Succession States were formed after the War, Dr. Schuster continued his political work, occupying the post of Minister of Trade and Commerce in the new Austrian Government.
He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1903.
