1942 Obituary [2]

GEORGE AUGUSTUS MOWER, whose death occurred in his eighty-second year on 26th November 1941, had been a Member of the Institution for nearly sixty years, having been elected as far back as 1884. He was born at Stillwater, Minnesota, and graduated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He came on a visit to England in 1883 as representative of the Crosby Valve Company and of the B. F. Sturtevant Company, both of Boston, U.S.A.; but since 1884 he had resided permanently in this country, establishing in the following year the Sturtevant Engineering Company, Ltd., and, later, the Crosby Valve and Engineering Company.

He further acquired a controlling interest in Messrs. The Bifurcated and Tubular Rivet Company, Ltd., of Aylesbury, which firm he reorganized.

In 1898 he was appointed agent for Messrs. The Cutler Hammer Company, of Milwaukee; and in 1913, in order to make and further develop their patented control gear in this country, he established the Igranic Electric Company, Ltd., retaining the chairmanship of these companies until his death.
