G. Barrow MSc, PhD commenced his engineering training and education in 1956 as an apprentice with English Electric Company Ltd. After a general apprenticeship he worked as an engineer in the mechanical and flight test departments. He was awarded an ONC in mechanical engineering while studying at the Harris College, Preston and a Whitworth Society Prize on the results of the national certificate examination.
In 1963 he received a Dip Tech in mechanical engineering at the University of Salford (then Royal College of Advanced Technology, Salford).
The same year Dr Barrow entered the Machine Tool Engineering Division of the Department of Mechanical Engineering UMIST to undertake research on metal cutting problems. He was awarded an MSc in 1965 and PhD in 1967 for work in 'hot machining' and in that year became a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering. He has had papers published and in 1969 he was awarded the F. W. Taylor medal of the International Institution for Production Engineering Research CIRP.
