G. C. Knight, MSc, Member, studied engineering at Derby Technical College whilst serving an apprenticeship with BR Locomotive Works at Derby and later joined the Engineering Division of BR Research Department. In 1958 he joined the mining industry working on the laboratory testing, manufacture and maintenance of mining equipment in both the public and private sectors.

He joined the NCB Mining Research and Development Establishment (then the Central Engineering Establishment) in 1964 and later gained a higher degree by research from the University of Nottingham. In 1968 he was appointed to his present position as Head of Rotary, Hydraulic and Electrical Group at the Establishment.
